Manta Divers August 2008
Welcome to the dog days of summer. If you’ve been following the shop calendar at all you know that we have been hitting all the happening local dive spots. Manta Divers has been busy not only helping to increase the diver population, but mentoring already certified divers toward advanced open water, rescue diver and a host of diving specialties.
As you may know, Team Manta invaded the waters of Wazee Lake in Black River Falls last week end. By Sunday, Manta Divers added one new open water diver, four brand new advanced open water divers, and a peak performance buoyancy specialist to our team of intrepid freshwater divers! Wazee Lake is conveniently located just off I94 in Black River Falls. The site of the former Jackson County Iron Mine Quarry, the lake was formed in 1983 when the mine ceased operation and the water pumps were removed. The Lake boasts an impressive 355 ft. depth, the state’s second deepest lake, but there is plenty to explore within the limits of recreational diving. We even stayed late Saturday and did a night dive. Boy, those fish cribs are scary at night! The bottom of the lake is scattered with gravel and rocks from the mining days that are sparkly and glisten provocatively when our lights fell upon them. It is a shame our diving geologist wasn’t there to enlighten us as to what these rocks were! The Wazee recreational Area has many hiking and biking trails and a few camp sites, so it is perfect for a little back to nature get away that includes diving. We did not brave the mosquitoes, but opted instead to rough it at the Best Western Arrowhead. A good time was had by all!
