Manta Divers December 2008
Well, Thanksgiving is over and the race is on to get that perfect gift for the diver in your life. Thankfully, Manta Divers has many suggestions for you!
At the top of the list for any new diver is a BDC or Regulator. New this year is the Aqualung i3 and Pearl i3 for women. The i3’s innovative inflation device streamlines a diver’s profile by eliminating the inflator hose and replacing it with an easy access lever on the BCD pocket. Press the lever down and the push rod opens all of the low profile “E Valves.” There is no need to guess which dump to activate! Press the lever up and the BCD inflates for quick buoyancy response. The Pearl i3, designed just for the female diver, joins the great i3 inflation mechanism with the great looks of the Diva BCD in a terrific pearl, pink and black color. For cutting edge buoyancy control, the i3 and i3 Pearl are the ticket! There are many new options for regulators. New from Aqualung, the Kronos, features a side exhaust vent, particularly advantageous for the photographer or instructor. Recently introduced at DEMA, the Micron is the lightest reg on the market, making it perfect for divers who like traveling to remote areas. It is available with a faceplate that matches the Pearl BCD, or a manly black! Most of the Aqualung regulators feature the patented ACD, automatic closure device that protects your investment from accidental water contamination when the dust cover is not in place. I am particularly excited to have in the shop the brand new ST1 from Atomic. The ST1 is a great addition to the already renowned Atomic line of regulators. The ST1 is a stainless steel alloy that is 2 times the strength of brass with corrosion resistance reaching that of titanium. In addition, the ST1 requires no nickel or chrome plating, making the ST1 100% recyclable. The first stage features five ports and a swivel, the second stage is made of lightweight titanium with the comfort swivel Atomic is famous for.
If you are thinking of something in a bit lower price range, consider an Aqualflex wetsuit or an underwater light set. Another great gift is a dive gear bag. Bags are available in a variety of sizes and prices. Lightweight mesh bags are nice if you are diving somewhere that requires you tote gear for a distance, or if you want a compact bag to keep your gear together on a boat. The mesh makes it easy to dunk the whole bag in the rinse tank after diving. For airline travel, a gear bag should be padded, or at least partially hard sided. Minimally, a padded regulator bag should be part of your luggage.
If the diver in your life already has gear, how about a collection of gear care products, a travel towel, BCD clips to keep gear streamlined? Could the diver use a new dive log, dive flag float or daytime flashlight? How about a new mask or snorkel? Stop in and check out Aqualung’s brand new fin, the Slingshot!
For the snorkelers on your list, our new Fish Flips underwater fish ID cards or a fish ID CDs are a natural. For the best sun protection while snorkeling, we suggest a dive skin or SPF 50+ rash guard. Do you know someone who is going on a cruise, but doesn’t know how to snorkel? Buy them a set of mask, fins and snorkel and Manta Divers will treat them to a free snorkeling lesson! If you are wondering if a friend would like diving, but do not want to buy the whole class for them, a Discover Scuba Diving certificate is the perfect gift!
Finally, for those last minute stocking stuffers, we offer underwater sound makers, inflatable surface signals, mini scuba tank or fin keyrings, or defog. Our diving themed silver jewelry is always popular with the dive goddesses out there. If you are still stumped, though, just buy a gift certificate. It is one size fits all and always appreciated. While here, don’t forget to fill out a wish list for yourself. Happy Hunting!December Sale

Reservations for the Manta Divers’ Easter trip to Grand Turk are due Dec. 31. The cost for the trip is $2219 per diver and includes airfare, accommodations, two tank boat dives daily and unlimited shore diving. A discount is available for those paying with cash or check. If you have been waiting for a good price on a dive trip, this is it! When you consider the way airfares have skyrocketed in the last month, this trip is truly a bargain! Remember, this is in the middle of whale migration time! (Can’t Wait!)
Congratulations to Manta Divers’ first certified divemaster, Barry Cartwright. Barry worked very diligently to achieve this goal, after first being certified as an open water diver in spring of 2006. Some of you may have already benefited from Barry’s patience and help while he was in training this summer. He is a great asset to Team Manta and we wish him luck on his next goal of dive instructor.
Congratulations are also in order for another Team Manta member, Rescue Diver Brandon Cartwright. Brandon just finished his senior year of football at Round Lake High and was given honorable mention on the Lake County All Area Football Team. In addition, Brandon was chosen by his teammates to be honored with the Michael Lampi Award. This award is named for a Round Lake High quarterback who died suddenly in a freak accident during a game. The award is given to the player who exhibits selflessness and heart for the team. Brandon is also the captain of his wrestling team, and wrestles at 285 lbs. (It is no wonder that no rescue diver students wanted to try to “save” Brandon when he was playing the victim!) Great Job, Brandon, and best of luck for the rest of your senior year and your future!
